Compliance v Absence: How not to make this a Rumble in the Jungle!
Small compliance teams need to be organised and nimble, especially when annual leave season arrives.
Compliance team member: “I’d like two weeks off in August.”
Compliance manager: “Absolutely. Let us just consult the sacred spreadsheet, the holiday calendar, the training matrix, the regulatory schedule, and the oracle.”
3 minutes later
Compliance manager: “Approved, you’re all set to book your holiday. We have documented contingency plans for this, your workload will be monitored or reassigned, you’re clear on the monitoring schedule for those weeks, and approvals will be reassigned where needed.”
Compliance team member: “Wow, that was quick.”
Compliance Manager: “We started planning for this in March.”
In a small compliance team, annual leave is just another risk assessment with a happier outcome.
Meanwhile, when someone calls in sick unexpectedly, and depending on the length of absence, a rallying call goes out:
Compliance Manager: “Deploy Plan 1.”
Everyone seamlessly switches roles. Short absence and everyone else is available.
Compliance Manager: “Deploy Plan 2.”
Still under control. Longer absence expected, which may have a commitment drag on other staff.
Compliance Manager: “Deploy Plan 3.”
The absence now affects a key person or team lead, so the wider team steps in, priorities are reviewed, and deadlines are protected.
The best compliance teams don’t just prepare for regulatory risks. They prepare for annual leave, appointments, unexpected sickness, and the mysterious Monday morning bug that’s somehow going around again.
