Lonestar Sends Data Center to the Moon with Athena Mission
The Moon’s First Data Center? It’s Happening.
The Moon is about to become home to something new—not just a lander, but a data center.
Intuitive Machines has launched Athena, its second lunar lander, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. This mission is heading straight for Mons Mouton, near the Moon’s south pole.
Onboard, Lonestar Data Holdings is making history. Their cutting-edge payload will test how data can be stored and retrieved in space. If successful, it could transform disaster-proof storage and redefine how we protect critical information.
Why This Mission is a Game-Changer
🟢 Storage put to the test – An 8TB SSD and Microchip PolaFire SoC FPGA will assess how storage technology performs in the Moon’s harsh conditions.
🟢 A bold hardware design – The hardware, designed by Bjarke Ingels, carries the faces of Apollo astronaut Charlie Duke and shuttle astronaut Nicole Stott. This lunar data center will remain on the Moon.
🟢 A cultural first in space – Bethesda and Imagine Dragons are storing the song Children of the Sky on the Moon and transmitting it back to Earth.
🟢 An international collaboration–including the Isle of Man Government, which is actively working a truly unique test of the Island’s robust Business Continuity regulations. More to come on this
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. In the near future, Lonestar plans to deploy fully operational lunar data centers, potentially inside protected tunnels. These centers could serve as a secure backup for Earth’s most important data.
Now, all attention shifts to the next milestone: Athena’s touchdown on March 6.
We are proud to support trailblazers like Lonestar as they push the boundaries of innovation.
🔴 Watch It Live: The Moon landing will be streamed on SpaceX’s YouTube and X platforms. NASA+ will also broadcast it, while Intuitive Machines provides real-time updates on X.
